The Department of Archaeology, Ancient History, and Cultural Heritage is seeking a university lecturer in cultural heritage based at Campus Gotland in Visby. The position involves being part of a dynamic and expanding research and teaching environment with just under a hundred employees in both Visby and Uppsala. The department includes seven main areas, with teaching at both undergraduate and advanced levels as well as doctoral education. Cultural heritage is an interdisciplinary field focusing on objects, buildings, and environments and how these can be sustainably preserved, used, and developed for the future. Campus Gotland is an international campus located in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Visby. The department's activities at Campus Gotland are in an expansive phase and currently involve about thirty employees working in cultural heritage, archaeology, and osteology. We now need to recruit a university lecturer in cultural heritage on a temporary basis due to parental leave.
Job Responsibilities
The position includes teaching, planning, administration, and examination in the department's courses in cultural heritage, primarily within the Object Conservator Program at the undergraduate level. Lectures and seminars at the advanced level in the department's other courses may also be included in the position. Teaching is conducted through lectures, seminars, practical fieldwork, study visits, and exercises at all levels. Teaching also includes course responsibility and course administration as well as supervision of students. In close collaboration with other employees, the person is expected to contribute to quality-driven teaching at both undergraduate and advanced levels, course development, and pedagogical development work.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for appointment as a university lecturer, according to § 41 of Uppsala University’s employment regulations (AO), one must have completed a degree from higher education and demonstrated pedagogical competence. A requirement for this position is education and a degree at the master's level in a relevant field for the position or that the applicant can demonstrate equivalent competence through work experience. When appointing a university lecturer, the requirement for scientific competence is replaced by the requirement for subject deepening.
Good knowledge of interior, furniture, and object design history, particularly from 1500–2000, is of central importance for the position, as well as good knowledge of using objects as sources of knowledge. Practical experience from the field of object conservation will also be considered significant, such as work with object assessments, analyses, and documentation in the private and/or public sector (e.g., through provenance investigations and cataloging at auction houses or museums), collection management, preventive conservation, cultural historical valuation of objects, and curating.
Pedagogical competence must be demonstrated through merits in education or otherwise within the relevant field of study. For eligibility, documented ability to teach and administer in Swedish and English is required. According to § 5 AO, a general eligibility requirement for teachers is the ability to collaborate and otherwise meet the suitability requirements necessary to perform the tasks well. Other abilities required for this position are flexibility, responsibility, and the ability to administer and lead courses and programs.
About the Position
The position is a temporary appointment for 12 months with a possibility of extension. The extent is 50% of full-time. Start date is March 1, 2026, or by agreement. Place of employment: Visby.
